“Discussions” are being held between the Broadway Shopping Centre and the bosses of a long delayed Indian restaurant that was initially due to open in the centre last summer.

Last year it was revealed that Papadoms was taking over the vacant 6,500 sq ft unit in Charles Street in Bradford city centre, between Zizzi and Patisserie Valerie.

But since then work on the restaurant had been beset by delays with the most recent opening date slated as November last year. But there has been no update in recent months.

Now a notice has been attached to the door of the premises stating that The Broadway Bradford has “recovered possession of the premises” and that the unit had been secured.

The Broadway has told the Telegraph & Argus an announcement on the restaurant’s future will be made in the coming weeks.

Previously Sanjeev Sanghera, founder and chief executive of Bavava Restaurants, the firm behind the Bradford venture, had told the T&A that they were “blown away” with the regeneration of Bradford’s city centre and that it had been instrumental in the decision to locate a restaurant in the city.

At the time he described a £1.2 million fit out to create a bar and cocktail lounge on the ground floor and a 400-seat restaurant on the first floor level. The restaurant would create 60 full-time equivalent jobs, employing about 90 people in total.

A year ago he revealed that they needed approval for some extra structural work at the premises, which had pushed back the opening until July. Then in September, he outlined how significant delays with the original contractor had been behind the move to open in November.

At the time he said: “We are extremely enthused and excited about finally getting this restaurant over the line. We are at the final fit out and then on to the decor stage and it looks fantastic.”

Mr Sanghera said he had been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years in Glasgow and was part of the city’s successful team to win the Curry Capital title - before Bradford took over the mantle.

More recently the firm has not responded to requests from the T&A for information on the progress of the restaurant.

The most recent signs of life came in the form of an update on Papadoms’ Facebook page in March, showing a video tour of the inside of the unit, with what appeared to be a fitted out bar and lounge area.

Ian Ward, general manager at The Broadway, said: “We have been in discussion with Papadoms for some time, and we will provide an update in the coming weeks.” ”

The first Papadoms restaurant opened in Sunderland and closed down last year in order to focus on the Bradford launch.

In the meantime the firm has recently opened two restaurants under its new Döner Haus brand and was working on opening a third.
