MORE than 150 objections have been lodged over a review of conditions at a quarry in Lightcliffe.

The 174 letters are against continuing and extending the quarrying of stone at Crows Nest Quarries at St Giles Road.

Objections sent to Calderdale Council raise concerns about the suitability of two roads for any increase in heavy goods vehicles, as well as noise and the loss of trees at the green belt site.

The council’s planning committee is due to consider the issues at a meeting on Tuesday, May 8.

Planning officers are recommending that the conditions be approved so that the quarry can continue operating.

The quarry is run by Marshalls Mono Limited and has been active since the early 1900s, covering 3.6 hectares.

In a report to the committee, planners detail how the review application is required every 15 years and is not an application for new quarrying activities.

The stone reserves at the site are estimated to be 300,000 cubic meters, providing sandstone, flag rock, slab, house walling, dry stone walling, crazy paving and rockery stone.

It states: “The quarry would be worked to 2038 in five phases, stone products would be stockpiled on site and collected until 2041.

“Subject to market demands the annual output is estimated by the applicant to be approximately 12,000 tonnes per annum. All extraction is required to crease by February 21, 2042.”

Ward councillor George Robinson (Con, Hipperholme and Lightcliffe) asked for the application to go to committee given the concerns.

“The application will remove a vast amount of trees. The site is location of protected rare orchids. St Giles Road and Spout House Lane are unsuitable for 60 lorry movements a day, given the narrow and congested nature of the road.”

Planning officers are recommending the list of conditions be approved to allow quarrying to continue at the site.

The meeting takes place at Halifax Town Hall at 2pm on Tuesday, May 8.
