TWO drivers who raced side-by-side through a red light at a busy junction have had their actions condemned by road safety campaigners.

Dashcam footage caught the two motorists flagrantly ignoring a red light at the crossroads of St Mary’s Road and Oak Lane in Manningham on April 25.

In the footage, the driver recording pulls up to the junction in St Mary’s Road as the traffic lights are turning to red.

Traffic begins to move in Oak Lane, but drivers are forced to slam on their brakes as a grey Toyota Land Cruiser is driven up the wrong side of the road and onto the junction.

It then slows down on the junction to wait for another vehicle, a black Toyota Yaris, which also drives up the wrong side of the road.

Both cars then set off at speed racing side-by-side down Oak Lane before eventually the Yaris moves onto the correct side of the road.

The incident happened at 7.07pm, and the driver who caught the dangerous driving on his dashcam described the pair of motorists as “idiots”.

He said: “I was shocked at their behaviour as there were a lot of children about at the time due to mosque school finishing.

“The junction has seen quite a few accidents in the recent past and if they behave like this there’s going to be more. I hope the idiots get prosecuted.”

The driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had checked the registration numbers of both vehicles and neither of the cars was taxed.

A spokesperson for Brake, the road safety charity, said: “This is a shocking video and we hope the drivers responsible are brought to justice.

“The laws of the road are there to protect us from death and serious injury and those who abuse them should be punished to the extent of the law.

“Dashcam footage is increasingly being used to catch dangerous drivers, however this alone is not enough.

“We urge the Government to invest in increased roads policing to act as a very real, and visual, deterrent on our roads.”

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading Operation Steerside, West Yorkshire Police’s crackdown on dangerous driving in Bradford, said the driving was “selfish”.

He said: “It shows selfishness. That selfishness put other drivers at risk.

“Selfishness is what underlines the problem we are having with such driving. It shows a disregard for other people.

“These people think they are justified in doing this, or just do not care, and that comes down to selfishness.

“These people are not prepared to wait and obey the rules and expect other people to conform to their desires.”
