SIMON Grayson is expected to reveal if he is staying at Valley Parade within the next 24 hours.

He met chairman Edin Rahic for further talks yesterday and admits he has pretty much made up his mind.

Grayson, whose 14-game short-term deal finished with a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe, said: “It needs to be done in the early part of the week. Then everybody can move forward.

“We’ve had plenty of discussions over the last few weeks, it’s not something that’s just reached a head in the last few days.

“It’s been talking about things that are needed for the club to move forward, whether I’m here or not.

“If I’m not here, then hopefully he takes on board the things that I think he needs to move and learn from. They’ve already said they need to learn from the mistakes they’ve made.

“That’s not to say I won’t be here helping to implement the ideas that I’ve suggested already.”

Grayson insists the squad need a summer revamp after falling eight points short of the play-offs.

And he believes that must be the priority ahead of other issues that he feels need to be improved around the club. “There needs to be a big turnaround with the squad,” he added. “There needs to be a lot of other things done behind the scenes as well.

“But you learn that sometimes you have to focus on the main things that a football club needs – that’s the first team.

“It’s nice to have all the other attributes and stuff that comes with it.

“But you get results on the pitch at first team level, then you can implement all those other ideas off it for the training ground etc somewhere down the line.

“The most important part is getting results and success and other things come with that.”

Grayson was heartened by the show of support towards him from City fans at Glanford Park on Saturday.

The draw meant the club finished in 11th spot in League One – well short of the play-off aim that he had targeted when he succeeded Stuart McCall in February.

Grayson added: “It’s nice to hear the supporters singing my name and people at the player of the year awards wanting me to stay.

“It feels nice to be wanted because it’s been a tough year for me.

“The Sunderland episode wasn’t easy to deal with and I’m not happy with how the results here have panned out.

“We came in when they were sixth and I wanted to make sure at the very least we were going to give ourselves an opportunity to fight in the play-offs.

“It hasn’t happened that way unfortunately for different reasons.

“The last few weeks have been about the team and the club restoring a bit more pride.

“The players have responded well after the 5-0 defeat at Blackpool with us losing only one of the last seven games.

“We drew too many of them to give us that chance with the play-offs. But they showed the right attitude and responded very well and that can only bode well for the future.”

City are not likely to announce the retained list of the out-of-contract players until after Friday’s fire memorial service, when the majority of the squad are expected to attend.

Grayson said: “I wouldn’t say everything is 100 per cent decided. But we’ve had a rough idea for the last few weeks what’s going to happen and we’ll address the situation in probably a week’s time.”
