A MAJOR fire has destroyed the roof of an empty office block just outside Bradford city centre.

Fire crews from across the district were called to the blaze at Eldon Lodge at around 6.30am this morning.

The building is situated on Eldon Place, off Manningham Lane.

Crews from Bradford, Shipley, Fairweather Green, and Leeds attended the incident, along with two aerial appliances.

A spokesman for the Shipley crew said: "The roof on the main part of the building has been destroyed.

"The building is under renovation and surrounded by scaffolding.

"Fire investigators are still at the scene."

A sign outside the building states that Eldon Lodge is for sale or to let as a 'substantial detached office building.'

Contractors were at work at the site of the three-storey block this afternoon, but major damage could be seen to the roof and third-floor of the property.

The site is fenced off, with a sign for Bradford Regional College erected in front of the building.
