BRANDON Pickersgill is a more than able deputy for injured full back Gregg McNally in John Kear’s eyes.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the youngster will be playing in that role against West Wales tomorrow.

The Bulls are taking no chances with McNally after his quad injury flared up again in training recently.

Kear sees no need to rush him back with Pickersgill continuing to fill in so well – but he doesn’t want to pigeonhole the 21-year-old in one role.

“Brandon’s obviously a young lad learning the game but I see his value at the minute featuring in a number of different positions,” said Kear.

“I see him as a magnificent squad member and one who is learning and improving and has got a great future.

“I remember with Scott Grix, who’s become a close friend of mine. I signed him at Wakefield when he was 21 and he played as fullback, wing, centre, half-back and even featured a little at hooker.

“He’s said to me that he thinks that’s made him the rounded player he is.

“He learns so much from what it felt like to feature in all these different positions. He has a better view of the game as a whole because of that.

“I think that is part of a player’s development and Brandon’s undergoing that.

“We’ve decided to take all pressure off Gregg McNally until he feels right to come back in the team.

“We feel able to do that for a number of reasons, the main one being young Brandon is doing a pretty good job deputising for him.

“But you never know, he might not be a full back this week. We’ll wait and see who we’ve got available.”

Kear also sees similar versatility with Rowan Milnes, another young talent who he wants to move around to try different situations.

The Bulls coach added: “He’s a cracking half back but, with how he runs and moves, I think he could be an exceptional centre.

“I spoke to Leigh Beattie and we’re going to have a look at him in the reserves and the under-19s in that different position.

“We want to help players to develop and improve but we also want to find out what’s best for the Bradford Bulls.

“You have to cover all the ‘what if’ scenarios and that’s what we are trying to do.”
