JOHN Kear is not setting a points target for the Bulls against League One fall guys West Wales tomorrow.

The Raiders, fresh from losing by a record 144-0 margin at York last week, were brushed aside 82-6 at Odsal in the Challenge Cup in February.

Bulls should run up another big score after York’s massive win saw them leapfrog to the top of the table on points difference.

But Kear will not send them out with an ambitious scoring target in mind.

He said: “We need to do the processes as we’ve practised. If we do that, hopefully points will come naturally.

“We’re going out to win the game and accrue as many points as possible.

“There’s no specific target or anything like that because I’m really confident in our players that over the course of the season we can get back that points difference.

“It doesn’t need to be done the week after them in one afternoon. That’s how we view it.”

West Wales have lost every game so far in their first year, conceding 432 points. But Kear expects a reaction from their embarrassment at Bootham Crescent – another reason why there will be no team orders to reach a certain number.

“You create an anxiety within the players if you do that,” he added. “There’s a pressure that winning 24-6 isn’t enough, that we’ve got to win 124-6.

“That isn’t how rugby league works. Inevitably West Wales are going to be hurt by that scoreline last week.

“There’s bound to be a response so it’s going to make it harder for us to do what we want to do. We’ll roll our sleeves up and get on with it.”

George Flanagan had an eventful game in the 32-6 win at Doncaster, scoring one try and setting up another after bombing a score when he was barged out of play while show-boating.

But Kear sees the hooker as a key figure in maintaining the intensity levels tomorrow.

The Bulls coach said: “George would be competitive no matter what you are doing.

“He will come up with howlers, which he accepts he did on Sunday, but he has that character that it won’t worry him.

“The next set, we were on their line and he created a try.

“That’s what you want. If someone comes out with a 'boo boo', rather than dwell on it and feel sorry for themselves, get it out of the system and do something to make up for it.

“We want those type of people and I’m looking for him to lead with the enthusiasm stakes.”

It was an impressive result at the Keepmoat Stadium against the previous top dogs. But Kear was equally pleased with the reaction of the team during this week’s review.

“If somebody had said to me we’re going to beat Doncaster by 26 points, I’d have been delighted. We don’t need to detract from our good afternoon’s work the previous Sunday.

“But again the players have heartened me this week because they weren’t satisfied. They felt it was a good 55-minute performance but we want to put together a complete performance.

“That’s the target that will be thrown down for the rest of the season.”
