Bradford’s Big Ben had been silenced indefinitely. The century-old City Hall bells had been decommissioned until Council bosses could come up hundreds of thousands of pounds to repair its rotting 118-year-old timber frame. Until then workmen had been called in to prop up the famous bells with steel struts until a more permanent solution could be found. With its tune-playing mechanism dismantled to make way for the props, there would be no bells, chimes, no striking of the hours and no tunes. The famous repertoire of the City Hall chimes had in the past included The Sound of Music, the theme from Z-Cars and Dr Kildare.
