FLATS in a terraced house in Keighley were evacuated this morning (Tuesday May 1) after a fire broke out in a kitchen.

Occupants of the four flats in Belgrave Road, Highfield, were alerted by a smoke alarm after the blaze began just after 9am.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to put out the flames, and the flats were then ventilated with fans.

Watch commander Greg Pearce, from Keighley Fire Station, said damage was mostly confined to the one flat thanks to fire doors.

He said: “The cause of the fire was textiles too close to a cooker hob. They caught fire and spread to the kitchen units.

“There was fire and smoke damage in the flat. Luckily the fire alarm went off in the flats, and the residents got out.”
