A MAN in his 40s had to be treated for smoke inhalation after his e-cig/vape device exploded while it was charging.

Firefighters from Keighley and Bingley attended the incident which occurred in Kirkgate, Silsden, at around 7.45pm today.

A spokesman for the fire service said the man had been charging his vape for around and hour-and-a-half when it suddenly exploded.

"The whole device exploded and set fire to the carpet.

"He was able to disconnect the device and call the fire service.

His smoke alarms were all in working order and were activated.

"The man was quite shaken and we administered some oxygen therapy before paramedics came to give him a check up.

"We would recommend people not to leave vapes charging unattended and certainly not overnight while you are asleep.

"Make sure you use a dedicated charger for the device.

"If one does explode; try and disconnect it if possible and then call the fire service straight away.

"Always make sure your smoke alarms are working."
