A CAR caught fire in the early hours of this morning in Apperley Bridge.

The car, a black BMW 318D, was in the car park of the George and Dragon pub, just off Harrogate road, by the River Aire.

Stephen Lappin, 30, of Apperley Bridge, said he was woken by the sound of a car alarm and a loud bang at 3.15am

Mr Lappin said: “I had my car stolen last year so naturally woke up to the alarm.”

On hearing the bang, Mr Lappin went outside to investigate and called the fire brigade.

A crew from Rawdon arrived at 3.30am to tackle the blaze and police were called eight minutes later.

It is not known if the car was stolen or the fire was started by an electrical fault.

West Yorkshire Police is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
