AN OPENING date has been announced for the six-screen boutique cinema being built next to The Broadway shopping centre in Bradford.

Operator, The Light, is to open the cinema’s doors on Friday, May 11, making it the firm’s tenth cinema in the UK and the second in Yorkshire.

Those behind the cinema group set up the business to challenge multiplex chains by offering their own take on the spirit of independent cinemas - offering reclining seats and ample leg room, as well as the ability to enjoy drinks from the bar and cafe at the seats.

The Light CEO Keith Pullinger said: “We are delighted to be joining The Broadway Centre and becoming part of the success of this thriving destination.

"We look to create a cinema environment that feels luxurious with plenty of atmosphere and personality, so we hope the Bradford audiences will notice a different cinema experience.

“The foyer is designed as a social space featuring a bar serving national and local beers, great wine and coffee and a varied selection of high quality food," he added.

The Light will show the latest blockbusters, independent films, live opera, ballet, theatre and classical, rock and pop concerts.

It can also offer a flexible programme to include requests from local communities and societies and to support local film events and productions.

The cinema is wheelchair friendly, and films can be audio described or subtitled, as well as showings catering for the specific needs of those with dementia or autism.

The complex, which takes the place of former shop units on Broadway, also includes cafes and restaurants, but tenants are yet to be officially announced.

Mexican food chain Tortilla and Gourmet Burger Kitchen have been linked to the development through planning and licensing applications.

Ian Ward, general manager of The Broadway, said: “We’re all thrilled The Light has made The Broadway Bradford its tenth home.

"Not only will it provide new jobs but it serves as a further boost to Bradford’s city centre regeneration, giving people even more reasons to come and visit."

When asked about the expected food offer at the units in the cinema complex he added that the line-up had not yet been confirmed but they hoped to be able to confirm matters soon.

Work started to clear the area for construction in August 2016, stripping back the building to a steel frame in readiness for the £4.1 million redevelopment to begin.

The cinema and restaurant development has been built at units 16 to 20 Broadway, which used to be home to stores such as Burger King, HMV, and Superdrug.
