An Ilkley man will be part of a Ghostbusters-themed world record attempt at this year’s London Marathon.

Property Director Andy Sharpe is one of a six-person group who will be running together dressed as the classic movie’s iconic car.

The original spook-catching vehicle was called Ecto-1, and the team have named themselves Ecto-6 in its honour.

They will be running for two cancer charities, CLIC Sargent and Tanyel’s Smile - which was set up in memory of team member Ceyhun Uzun’s daughter, Tanyel, to help patients in Northern Cyprus.

The group is also hoping to set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘fastest marathon in a six person combined costume’.

They already have one world record to their name after breaking the previous time for a five-strong combined costume marathon team - dressed as Scooby Doo characters - in 2017. Thirty-year-old Andy, however, is determined to go ‘one better’ at this year’s Sunday, April 22 race.

It will be his fourth London Marathon for CLIC Sargent, a charity he has raised more than £30,000 for since 2012.

He said: “Achieving a Guinness World Record at the 2017 London Marathon was a brilliant experience, especially for the incredible worldwide exposure it gained for CLIC Sargent.

“Tanyel’s Smile is a relatively new charity which will hopefully also benefit greatly from the scale of exposure, resulting from our upcoming 2018 World Record attempt.

“I am very proud of my fundraising achievements for CLIC Sargent since 2012 and it’s been an honour supporting the real heroes who are the children battling this awful disease on a daily basis throughout the UK. Unfortunately children in Northern Cyprus who are battling this disease have even less chance of survival due to the limited funds available for research and treatment.

“Alongside my ongoing fundraising for CLIC Sargent, I am proudly dedicating the majority of my future fundraising to supporting Tanyel’s Smile.”

Andy, along with his friend Lucy Harvey, also played a key role - by visiting stores to speak to staff - in a 2017 campaign to secure a corporate partnership with Morrisons for CLIC Sargent. The successful campaign has resulted in a partnership which could be worth about £8 million for the charity over three years.

Sports and Challenge Events Manager at CLIC Sargent, Laura Mayes, said: “When cancer strikes young lives we fight tirelessly to limit the damage it causes beyond their health by offering practical, emotional and financial support.

“We rely entirely on donations to fund our work so we can’t thank our brilliant, record-breaking team enough for their fantastic efforts.”
