SCHOOLS and businesses across Bradford have been undertaking challenges in aid of Sport Relief.

The campaign’s focus this year is “stepping up” by aiming to beat one billion steps per day, every day for the week of Sport Relief, March 17 to 23.

Steps are the name of the game at Byron Primary School where pupils and staff have set the target to walk the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats – roughly equating to two million steps.

By yesterday afternoon they had ‘reached’ Sheffield.

Staff and pupils at BBG Academy, Birkenshaw, are also aiming to take on the marathon route, and raise £1,000.

They are making the 1,000-mile trip on static bikes – with someone on a bike between 9am and 3pm – instead of walking.

There have been some interesting additions, with one teacher playing her saxophone while cycling and another planning her lessons.

Pupil Zak Munday said what they were doing was very important “because it’s helping others that may not have as much as us”.

Bradford College is also fundraising for Sport Relief through several initiatives.

In the David Hockney Building, students have been participating in a “row the channel” challenge.

The college had two rowing machines set up where students took turns to row 500-metre stints until they reached the equivalent distance of the

Channel.

The college also put on dance sessions and has a mini sports day planned for Thursday afternoon at its Trinity Green site.

Staff at legal firm Ramsdens, with branches across West Yorkshire including Little Germany and Elland, are undertaking their own mammoth effort.

The challenge across their offices is to reach 10 million steps over the week.

Many staff have ditched the car, choosing to walk or run into work to try and meet the target.

Other activities have included salsa dancing, walks between offices and static steps at a business conference.
