Outgoing Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Abid Hussain was presented with an unusual gift as he officiated at his last full council meeting on Tuesday - a vacuum cleaner!

Cllr Hussain and his wife were asked what they wanted after fellow councillors had a whip-round - and he said they couldn’t think of anything else.

“It was a little joke and it is a very nice gift but we wanted it to stay at City Hall to be used here. I am afraid I do not know how to use it,” he mused.

“I am being given another gift for myself at the weekend but it is a surprise.”

In return he presented two crystal table lamps to be kept in the mayor’s rooms.

“I brought light into the room through the love of the people who came to visit me here and who were overjoyed by the beauty of the room and City Hall. I wanted to present the lamps to keep that light here forever.”

Receiving the gift from the Lord Mayor, Bradford Council Leader Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe said: “The gift offered by the Lord Mayor is a very tasteful and a welcome addition to the room where guests are welcomed. We sincerely thank him."
