HUGE amounts of food and clothes have been donated in just one week to a Bradford Masjid to be sent to refugees and victims of war in Syria.

After suggestions from worshippers, the Masjid Ibraheem Education Centre in Thornbury agreed to collect donations for the Hand in Hand for Syria charity.

Acting chair of the Masjid, Aziz Khan, said he has been shocked by the amount of donations dropped off by local people.

He said: “We were expecting maybe one van full, but people have been streaming in and we will need at least four big vans for it all.”

Councillor Mohammed Shafiq (Labour, Bradford Moor) added: “It is great to see the community right behind the Syria appeal.

“It shows there is a real sense of community in Bradford Moor and beyond.

“The commitment and hard work of the Masjid show how well organised it is and the work it does for the community.”

The donations, which filled almost the whole prayer room, have now been collected and will be delivered to Syria in the coming days.
