SIR - I am seeking information about Alice Ann Mallinson (or Mallison), who was drowned in a boating disaster at Barmouth, North Wales, on August 1, 1894.

Alice was the daughter of John and Alice Mallinson, of Manningham.

Aged 30, she was a teacher at Lilycroft Board Schools (now Lilycroft Primary School) and a member of Manningham Wesleyan Chapel Choir. She was also a member of Bradford Festival Choral Society.

She was on holiday in Barmouth with 20 members of the National Home Reading Union, organised by a Congregational Minister, Thomas Arthur Leonard.

On August 1 the party went on a boating trip on the Mawddach Estuary and ten of them were drowned when two of the boats sank. The Barmouth Disaster, as it became known, attracted national publicity.

Alice’s funeral took place at Heaton Baptist Chapel on August 6, 1894. It will be the 125th anniversary of the disaster in August 2019 and I’m researching the episode for a book.

I would like to hear from anyone that may have information about Alice Mallinson; perhaps there may be descendants of her family living in Bradford (she had six brothers and sisters). For more about my research visit douglashope.co.uk and contact me on douglas.g.hope@btinternet.com
