A MAN who died after coming off a mobility scooter in Keighley may have been hit by a vehicle, police have said.

West Yorkshire Police’s major collision and inquiry team is now appealing for any witnesses to the incident which occurred in Lawkholme Lane.

The 81-year-old man was found at 1.08pm on Thursday, February 15.

Investigations are looking at the possibility the man may have been struck separately by another vehicle after coming off his scooter.

He is understood to have been travelling along the pavement in Lawkholme Lane towards the junction with Bradford Street.

Police suggest the scooter then went off the pavement for unknown reasons and came to rest by the side of the road.

The victim was found in the road by members of the public having suffered fatal head injuries.

Sergeant Ann Drury of the major collision and enquiry team, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident which led to the death of this gentleman and are appealing for any witnesses who can tell us what took place.

“Due to the serious head injuries suffered by the gentleman there is a possibility he has been struck by another vehicle while immobile on the road.

“We know there were a number of motorists and pedestrians in the area at the time and I am keen to speak to anyone who saw the gentleman either before the incident or the incident itself to come forward and speak to us.

“We do also know there were several cars in the locality at the time of in the incident and we would like to speak to the drivers or passengers in particular, as they may have seen what took place.

“Those vehicles are believed to be possibly a silver BMW and a dark red/ purple Ford Fiesta which were travelling towards Keighley town centre, and a dark coloured people carrier type vehicle which was travelling away from the direction of Keighley Town Centre.”

Councillor Khadim Hussain (Ind, Keighley Central) said he was very sad to hear the news.

“The police have informed the ward councillors of the incident and I am assured they are carrying out an investigation to find out what happened. I send my condolences to his family.”
