A MAN has spoken of his terror after he was assaulted by a patient while being treated in Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Phillip Edghill, 65, of Holme Wood, was sent to hospital following an appointment at his doctor’s surgery.

He had a blood clot on his leg which had gone to his lung.

Mr Edghill was taken to Ward Four and was sleeping when the “petrifying” assault unfolded.

Mr Edghill said the man went “berserk”, taking a running dive and jumping on top of him.

“He took a dive, his whole body was across my body. It took four big blokes to hold him down and put him back in bed.

“He was asleep – it just seems he woke up and all hell was let loose.

“What would have happened if he had damaged me?”

The great-grandad said he was left petrified by the incident and was moved to another ward.

He said the man jumped on him “for no apparent reason”.

“I was scared stiff,” said Mr Edghill. “If I had to go back into hospital, I would not go.

“I don’t want to go back there, it has put me off. In the 80s I spent 18 months in hospital and never had anything like that at all.”

Although he had moved wards, Mr Edghill said he had still been worried about what happened.

“I was still petrified when I was up there. I didn’t sleep very well as I was frightened of the same thing happening again.”

He has now put in a formal complaint to the hospital about the incident.

Mr Edghill said it should not have happened and he has demanded a written apology.

“I didn’t expect to be attacked while I was in there,” he said.

“I hope they don’t put someone like that on a ward again. The other patients must have been terrified, I know I was.”

A Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson confirmed that a patient was assaulted at Bradford Royal Infirmary on Sunday, February 4.
