A CAR ended up in a field after the driver complained of an icy road.

A blue Volkswagen Polo came off North Bank Road, Bingley, and landed in a nearby field.

Neither the driver or passenger were injured in the crash, reported at 8.55am on Friday.

A witness told the T&A he saw the car rolling over three or four times after skidding on the untreated road surface. He added that the road was no longer on the council's priority gritting routes.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed the details of the crash and that the driver had complained to officers about the icy conditions on North Bank Road. He added Bradford Council had been contacted by police following the incident.

John Kwiatkowski, 47, of North Bank Road, said he heard the bang of the impact of the crash.

He said he had complained about the lack of gritting on the road to the local authority and claimed there had been 12 gritting requests for the road since December last year.

Mr Kwiatkowski said: “The car must have had a six to eight-foot drop.

“I heard a bit of a bang. The car flipped over and corkscrewed.

“It’s absolutely crazy that the council don’t grit it. It’s a main road between two schools. It is a good job that it was half-term as it could have been worse.

“I’m calling for the council to reinstate it. It should not take something like this to happen for them to do it.

“People on my street have complained to the council about it too.

“It’s a worse road because it is on a hill. It could have dire consequences. I want it back on the gritting route.”

The road is a busy route during term time as parents take their children to nearby Cottingley Village Primary School, in Cottingley Moor Road, Bingley, and Sandy Lane Primary School, in Cottingley Road, Allerton.

Councillor Simon Cooke (Con, Bingley Rural) also called for the council to add North Bank Road to its gritting list. He said: “The council needs to look at roads like that. The road is widely used as a cut-through, especially for the local schools.

“It is quite a steep road. The council needs to look at its gritting policy.

“Drivers should also be careful in the winter weather.”

The Telegraph & Argus has contacted the council for a comment about the incident.
