POLICE have launched an investigation following a "targeted" shooting incident at a property in Wyke.

It is understood a woman in her 20s and her young daughter were inside at the time.

Officers were called to Wedgemoor Close in Wyke just before midnight after males were reported to be trying to gain entry to some flats.

The caller then reported hearing a vehicle drive away.

Officers attended and found damage to a door which was believed to have been caused by a firearm. Further examination established this was consistent with a firearms discharge.

A check of the address found entry had been gained and the property had been searched.

Inquiries are at an early stage and are continuing in the area today along with reassurance patrols, but this is believed to be a targeted attack.

Neighbour Nicola Rowley said she was asleep at the time of the incident, but her friend who is staying with her at the moment was in her own bed but awake.

"She said she heard male voices which stood out because there are no men living here or at the address," said Ms Rowley.

"My friend said she heard a man shout something that sounded like: "You will see what happens now. Just watch." She also heard two loud bangs which we've been told since were probably the gun shots.

"I have lived here for around a year. The young woman and her little girl are really lovely. They are not at all noisy and there hasn't been any trouble at all.

"It was a real shock to hear that someone had fired a gun at the door. It is usually fairly quiet around here.

"I asked the police if I could go and see her and check if she was all right but they said she had left.

Detective Chief Inspector Jaz Khan, of the Firearms Prevent Team, said: “From our enquiries so far we believe that the vehicle used in this offence was black or dark coloured and of similar size to a Volkswagen Golf.

“We would therefore appeal to anyone who may have seen a similar vehicle in the area, or anyone seen acting suspiciously around one, before or shortly after the incident.”

The Firearms Prevent Team is leading the investigation and anyone with information which can assist their enquiries is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 1967 of 14 February.

Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
