A man accused of unleashing a knife attack on his wife told a court he did not deliberately injure her.

Turkan Lowmani, 33, of Idle Road, has gone on trial at Bradford Crown Court charged with the attempted murder of his wife Luftia Lowmani.

A jury previously heard the incident unfolded in August 3 last year following an argument, with Mrs Lowmani sustaining "multiple" stab wounds to her abdomen, back, limbs and neck.

The couple's three children were in the house at the time.

Giving evidence to the court through a Farsi interpretor, Lowmani said he arrived home on the night of August 3 to find his wife on the phone to someone she said was her cousin.

He said when he went in to the bedroom there was a "change" in her face which shocked him.

Lowmani said he then snatched the phone from her hand and an argument followed as Mrs Lowmani attempted to get the phone back.

He said he knew she wanted to delete the number from the phone.

The fracas then moved downstairs and Lowmani said he went towards the door to leave, but his wife stood in his way before the shouting "got really loud" and she began throwing punches at him.

At one point the pair left the house, but later returned.

"She came home and I came home - I just wanted to make sure she had calmed down," Lowmani said.

He said she had not calmed down and was still attacking him and asking for the phone, which he did not give her, and that he was upset and questioning why his wife was keeping things "hidden" from him.

The pair then moved into the kitchen, where Lowmani says his wife grabbed the knife and he was not sure if she was going to attack him, or if she wanted to scare him.

"I don't know what was in her mind," he said. "All I wanted to do was get the knife from her as she was upset."

Lowmani said he tried to get the knife from her, there was a struggle, and he then saw his clothes covered in blood and his wife's hands bloodied.

When asked by Tahir Khan QC, defending, if he had deliberately inflicted any injuries to his wife, Lowmani replied "no, not at all" and said he would "never" hurt his wife or children.

He said all he can remember is taking the knife off her, and said while he told police he may have stabbed her two or three times, he can't remember doing that.

Lowmani said he "didn't recognise himself" and said: "I'm just happy my wife is alive and my kids have their mother".

He denies the attempted murder of his wife and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The trial continues.
