A FAMILY pet switched on the electric oven in a house which caused a kitchen blaze earlier this evening.

Firefighters from Fairweather Green and Shipley attended the fire in Sowden Road, Heaton, Bradford, at 4.40pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said the cooker was on fire and they used two breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish it.

"On investigation it was discovered that the family pet dog had accidentally switched the electric cooker on by jumping up and it had caused items in the oven to catch fire.

"Fortunately the family had a fitted and working smoke alarm which alerted them and they were all outside the property when we got there.

"We urge everyone who has smoke alarms to test them and if they get in touch with us we will come along and test them for free or fit them where homes have none.

"We also give fire safety advice."

No one was injured in the fire.
