POLICE have arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving as they try and piece together the last moments before a horrific car crash which killed a man in Bradford.

Bradford police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help them find out how the Audi Q7 ended up colliding with a wall in Bowling Back Lane on Sunday.

One of the car's occupants, a man, believed to be in his 20s and not to be local, died at the scene at the junction with Birklands Street, it happened just after 1.30pm.

Emergency services were called to the incident which flipped the car onto its side.
Police have said there were five men travelling in the grey-coloured vehicle which seemingly “lost control.”

Police said four other males in the vehicle were treated for injuries in hospital.

Police are also looking for the occupants of a white hatchback-style car, possibly a WV Golf, who may have witnessed the incident or seen the Audi being driven in the area prior in the time leading up to the crash.

The road was closed as police made investigations at the scene but it re-opened at around 5.30pm.

Fire crews from Bradford and Odsal were also mobilised to help.

Sarah  Lou Relf came across the scene about two minutes after it happened and before any emergency services had arrived.

She said she saw the vehicle on its side with the windscreen completely smashed and “nearly removed from its frame.”

She told the Telegraph & Argus the injured man was on the path where passers-by were trying to help.

“I drove past the scene just after it happened the poor woman and man holding the injured man was something I won’t forget. RIP thoughts to all those affected.”

She added: “The man was being held by a older Asian woman and a man near his head. He was unfortunately unresponsive and bleeding very heavily from his head.

“There were no emergency services on scene at that time but in all honestly they would not have been able to being him back. He was too hurt to his head.”

She added: “There were lots of people standing in shock and the lady holding him was obviously very, very scared and in shock. There was nothing anyone could have done.”

Bowling and Barkerend ward councillor Hassan Khan (Lab) said: “My sympathies go to the family of the man who died. This bereavement must be hard for them.

“I believe he was not a local man but my heart goes out to his loved ones. We don’t know exactly what the circumstances are and police are investigating why this happened but we all know that cars can be dangerous at any time but in this icy weather people do need to take an extra bit of care.”

The arrested 22-year-old has been released pending further inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information of the Audi Q7 before the crash should call police on 101 quoting log reference 0791 or January 21, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
