EMERGENCY services were called to a reservoir in Bradford after reports of a man in the water.

Police, fire, and ambulance crews attended the scene at Chellow Dene Reservoir off Chellow Lane just before 9.20am on Sunday, January 21.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Call from police to reports of a male in the water.

"Male with, believed, mental health issues in and out of water. Crews using water sleds to assist police in rescuing the male.

"Appliances from Fairweather Green, Shipley, Bingley, and Rastrick in attendance along with specialist officers."

One witness said: "The man had swum onto an island in the reservoir. 

"There were three boats being used, it was a large-scale operation that went on for a number of hours."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We received a call from a member of the public at 9am. 

"The man was on a small island in the middle of the reservoir. We called our force negotiators, and with support from fire crews and paramedics, he voluntarily came to police at around 12.15pm."

The man, who is aged in his late-40s, was recovered safely but was said to be suffering from the effects of hypothermia. 

Police said he was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary for check-ups. 

He was later discharged.
