A SCHOOL bus has crashed into railings this morning after skidding on black ice.

It happened at around 7.45am on Gaisby Lane, Shipley.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said it's not thought anyone has been injured.

Brian Glover shared these pictures. His granddaughter was travelling on the bus at the time and said that it had nearly "tipped over".

Mr Glover said: "This steep road has not been gritted . Bradford Council should be ashamed of themselves.

"The road was just a sheet of ice and it was difficult to stand up on it.

"The driver of the bus should be given a medal for averting a disaster with a bus full of children."

Oliver Howarth, Operations Director at First Bradford: “We can confirm that black ice on the roads has resulted in a minor incident with one of our vehicles, but fortunately there have been no reported injuries or other vehicles involved.

“Our drivers are trained to deal with icy road conditions and we advise drivers to allow more time for manoeuvers and to leave plenty of space between vehicles.”

First also said that double-decker buses are 'tilt-tested' to a minimum of 28 degrees, so are stable with a very low centre of gravity.

The road is on Bradford Council's gritting route and the authority said the road had been gritted.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We are thankful that everybody is safe after this incident this morning.

"Gaisby Lane was gritted last night as part of our Priority One gritting route. The road has been gritted again this morning and our gritting team helped get the bus back on to the road.

"Overnight gritting patrols are out across the district overnight every night at the moment dealing with reports of icy road conditions.

"Our staff are working hard covering more than the 700 miles of gritting routes, which is 62 per cent of the total road network in the district, which is higher than in neighbouring authorities in West Yorkshire.

"Each route can take several hours to cover, in often very difficult conditions.

"We completely understand residents' frustrations and the challenges this weather presents for driving, but we want to reassure people that our crews are gritting continuously during this winter weather."
