A flood alert has been issued tonight for the River Calder in the Brighouse area.

The Environment Agency put out the alert in response to the forecast for heavy rainfall expected to cross the area tonight and into tomorrow morning.

The stretch of river covered by the alert runs between Todmorden and Brighouse.

A Bradford Council warning said: “Flood alert for river Calder from Brighouse to Todmorden for those who live that side of the district. Sign up for alerts and warnings if you haven’t already.”

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “It is not possible to predict the precise location of the heaviest rainfall, but where this occurs, there’s a risk of localised surface water flooding and flooding from smaller rivers, affecting roads, homes and businesses.

“We currently expect the Upper Calder and its tributaries in the Todmorden and Walsden area to be at relatively high levels from around 6am onwards on Monday morning, before falling as the rain clears after lunch time.

“This means that we are taking the precautionary measure of issuing a flood alert this evening and will be closely monitoring the situation through tonight. Please stay aware of your surroundings and do not put yourself at risk by walking or driving through flood water.”
