MOVES to make a busy road in Bradford safer have been welcomed by a local Councillor.

A pedestrian refuge island and footway build outs in Killinghall Road, Bradford Moor, have been approved by Bradford East Area Committee.

The refuge island will be built near the road's junction with Thornbury Road, with the pavement extensions being onstalled at the junction with Ellerton Street.

Double yellow lines will also be put in from the junctions with Thornbury Road and Carrington Street.

The road safety improvements come after there have been eight crashes on this stretch of road in the past five years, with six resulting in injuries to pedestrians.

Councillor Mohammed Shafiq (Labour, Bradford Moor), who sits on Bradford East Area Committee, said he hopes the changes will have a positive impact.

He said: "The plan was put forwards to prevent further injuries and I hope this will eliminate any further accidents on this spot of the road.

"One of the major concerns I raised was around dangerous driving which is leading to accidents in this area so I hope this proposal will make drivers slow down and stop speeding excessively."
