LOCAL People is the latest theme for a fresh big screen exhibition of work from artists across the district.

The ongoing Not Just Hockney presentation on City Park’s big screen regularly features work from six artists at a time.

Their work is displayed for two months as part of the project to promote the work of local artists.

For January and February the artists included are Danny Abrahams, Bob Barker, Ian Beesley, Doug Binder, Shy Burhan, and Phil Jackson,

Arts enthusiast Colin Neville is behind the project and the Not Just Hockney website, which displays online the work of more than 300 artists.

Mr Neville said: “Bradford is a great place for photographers and painters to work, as the people here have bags of character and resilience.

“There’s a brilliant photograph to be taken, or sketch to be made, on every street corner.

“The documentary photographers, Ian Beesley, Shy Burhan, and Phil Jackson, each with their own unique style, capture scenes of everyday life that showcase the cultural diversity, buzz and energy of the district.

“Local painters, Danny Abrahams and Bob Barker, also both emphasise the relationship of town and countryside to the lives and memories of local people. We are shaped by the geography and experience of where we live, and this comes through, writ large, in their work.

“And Doug Binder’s brilliant life studies remind us that, whatever our social background, we all share a common humanity.”

The ongoing exhibition is supported by Bradford UNESCO City of Film, which runs the big screen.

Director David Wilson said: “Colin has chosen a perfect theme for this exhibition focusing on the people of Bradford.

“There is some really fabulous diverse work from documentary portraits capturing everyday moments to special celebrations like a couple just married; to paintings of people connecting with local landscapes on walks through our beautiful countryside. As always Not Just Hockney brings to City Park a splash of colour with some really incredible work from talented artists and photographers.

“I’d like to thank Colin for all the energy he puts into curating this unique exhibition and to all the artists for sharing their work with Bradford.”

This month’s featured artists are:

Danny Abrahams, a self-taught Bradford artist, who paints predominantly in oils on canvas.

Bob Barker is a self-taught local artist with a studio in Eccleshill, whose nostalgic paintings are inspired by local scenes and local people.

Ian Beesley is a Bradford-born documentary photographer with an international reputation for his work. His photographs have been widely exhibited and he is the Artist in Residence for the ‘Born in Bradford’ health research project.

Doug Binder was a founder member of the Underground Design Group of artists in London in the 1960s and 70s.

He is the curator and painter in residence at the Dean Clough Arts Centre.

Shy Burhan is a professional photographer, based in Shipley, who undertakes local social-documentary projects, such as photographing staff and customers in Real Junk Food Project cafes across Britain.

Phil Jackson is a Bradford born and based photographer specialising in local social-documentary projects, including at the Missione Catolica Italiana soup kitchen, the Hirst Wood Regeneration Group, and the Hale (Healthy Living) project.

The Not Just Hockney exhibition runs every day at 12.30pm on Bradford’s big screen.
