A man in his 30s has died after a police chase on the M606 near Bradford.

Police officers wanted to stop a silver Audi A4 on Stoney Ridge Road in  Heaton but the driver failed to stop for them at 2.45am.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said officers followed the Audi and it crashed into the barriers on the M606, close to the junction of the M62 westbound.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and his family has been informed.

An immediate referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to the circumstances.

A spokesman forthe IPCC said: "We have begun an independent investigation into a fatal road traffic incident at around 3 am today (Monday) following a police pursuit in Bradford this morning.

"The driver of an Audi vehicle died at the scene on the M606 southbound at the junction with the M62. After being notified by West Yorkshire Police, we have deployed investigators to the incident and the police post incident procedures.

"The M606 was re-opened late this morning but the fast sliproad from junction 3 to the M62 westbound remains closed for police investigations to take place."

At lunchtime, a Highways England spokesman said: "Once completed we have a large amount of safety barrier to repair. The link is likely to be closed for several hours yet. Traffic towards the M62 is advised to utilise the roundabout."

The M62 was also closed westbound earlier within J26 but re-openend just before 8am.

The incident has been causing major disruption on surrounding roads with tailbacks to Leeds.

One motorist, who was commuting from Kirklees to Bradford this morning, said: "There were loads of police still at the scene on the opposite carriageway to me."
