A BABY who was left fighting for her life by meningitis will be one-year-old on Monday – a ‘miracle’ milestone her parents feared might never happen.

It will be a double celebration for the parents of Kia Gott, who have just been told by doctors that their daughter, who has had all four of her limbs amputated, still has some hearing.

Mum Vikki and dad Paul, from Wyke, had been warned by medics treating Kia that she would most likely lose her hearing, be brain-damaged and blind, but they were determined to cling on to hope she would prove them wrong.

The family are still waiting to find out about her sight but they have shared footage of Kia with eyes wide open seeming to react to sensory lights above her hospital bed.

Kia was struck down by meningococcal septicemia in September. Doctors said it was the worst case they had seen for 25 years.

This week her parents picked up piles of presents for her, her big sister Elise, four, and brother Kayden, eight, all paid for by well-wishers who responded to a justgiving appeal set up by Mr Gott’s aunt, Donna Gott.

“Vikki and Paul were overwhelmed by the gifts,” said Mrs Gott. “The children will be thrilled. Kia is still battling. She has had more skin graft surgery but doctors say she might need just one more.

“We’ve had good news from tests that suggest Kia has some hearing. We still don’t know for sure about her eyesight but she seems to be following sensory lights above her bed. We are all hoping that is a positive sign. Her family will be with her on Monday for her birthday. It will be a quiet celebration and a day to give thanks for her being with us.”

More than £3,000 was raised for toys on a Justgiving page run by Care Dynamics in Shipley where Donna Gott is a director.

Crowdfunders on another page topped £36,000. When that page ended, a new page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/cheryl-dibbin was set up with a goal of £10,000 to help make Kia’s future brighter. It has raised more than £1,000.

Kia’s parents and brother and sister will all be going on a VIP trip to London on January 6 to visit Buckingham Palace, the Science Museum and take in a West End show after Donna nominated them for a competition. Care Dynamics has also paid for the family to see Cinderella at the Alhambra.

The family are also due to meet Bradford South MP Judith Cummins soon to enlist her help campaigning for the NHS to reverse its decision to decision to stop giving babies under 12 months the MenC vaccine.
