FRUSTRATED residents are calling for something to be done to tackle the problem of overflowing bins on their housing complex.

David Sereika, 69, who lives at the Incommunities-managed Heygate Close in Baildon, said the problem reared its head in summer, when bin collections went fortnightly.

He claims there are not enough bins for the amount of people who live in the development and that the problems have been raised with Incommunities earlier in the year and a number of calls have been made to Bradford Council.

However, both say they have not been made aware of the issues.

There are 34 occupied flats out of 35 at Heygate Close and these are a mixture of one and two bed.

Mr Sereika said: “It started when they brought the fortnightly collection in. They are full.

“It’s piled up on top of the bins, sky high, and when the bin men come they are disgusted with it.

“We are fed up of it.

“Nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

“It’s just not nice. In summer, it stank.

“We don’t have missed collections, there’s just not enough bins.”

Mr Sereika said supplying the housing development with bigger bins would be a solution to the problem.

When the Telegraph & Argus visited the development, the lids of the green general waste bins could not be closed for rubbish and many had more bags piled atop of them.

An Incommunities spokesperson said: “We have not had reports made direct to us from local residents about any issues with the bins.”

The spokesperson said the local Neighbourhood Housing Officer would be visiting and urged any resident with concerns to raise them or telephone her direct.

“With the introduction of alternate weekly bin collections we made sure additional recycling bins were available for the benefit of residents at Heygate Close,” they added.

“We have also been working with the Council and our customers across the district to ensure general and recyclable waste is separated for disposal.

“We will continue to monitor this to ensure waste is going into the right bins and provide information to residents on the importance of recycling household waste.”

A spokesperson for Bradford Council added: “We do not have a record of the residents of Heygate Close contacting the Council about a problem with their waste bins.

“We would be happy to discuss this with them and to try and address any concerns they have.

“We have been working with social housing provider Incommunities to make sure there is adequate provision for waste disposal and recycling at all their sites.

“Information about recycling and all other waste disposal issues is available on our website.”

A number of residents complained of missed collections earlier in the year when the system changed to fortnightly collections.

Bradford Council apologised for any missed collections, but said a “bedding-in” period was required.
