A DRIVER is currently "drying off in the cells" after jumping in a beck to try and swim away from police.

Officers from the Bradford West Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said they were on patrol on Toller Lane earlier today when they saw the man driving a red van with no road tax.

After indicating for the vehicle to stop, the man refused and a ten-minute chase ensued.

After abandoning the van in Wilsden, the man tried to run from officers and in a bid to escape, jumped in a beck, thought to be Wilsden Beck.

Despite trying to swim away, the man was detained by officers and taken into custody.

A post on the Bradford West NPT Facebook page read: "The driver ran from the vehicle straight into the beck before trying to SWIM away.

"It's fair to say the deep cold water hampered the driver's escape, and he was detained after washing ashore near to the waiting dry toasty officers.

"The driver was arrested for dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police, and no insurance.

"He is currently in the cell area drying off.

"Bradford West police officers are committed to tackling dangerous drivers who cause a risk to law-abiding citizens.

"We would like to thank members of the public who assisted officers during the pursuit and directed us to the offending vehicle's location.

"Thanks #youcanswimbutyoucanthide."
