A BRADFORD MP has urged drivers to think about the consequences of their actions during Road Safety Week.

The initiative, which runs until tomorrow, is organised by the Brake charity to inspire schools, organisations and communities to take action on road safety.

Bradford South MP Judith Cummins met with Great Horton ward councillors Joanne Dodds and Abdul Jabar, who is also Bradford Council’s neighbourhoods and community safety portfolio holder, near Spencer Road and Clayton Road, Lidget Green, to highlight the message.

Mrs Cummins, who was recently awarded a parliamentarian road safety award by Brake and Direct Line for her dedication to championing the cause, said: “We still have too many deaths in Bradford through dangerous driving, so this is to remind people that speed kills and there’s no need to speed.

“We’re here to raise awareness with the public and with drivers, just to say ‘slow down’, there’s too many fatalities, they are on the increase and people need to be aware that their actions can cause death. This particular road is more or less a crossroads between lots of different places, but people use it as a rat run - we are saying to people ‘be aware that your actions can kill people’.”

Cllr Jabar said: “We’ve had a lot of issues on both of these roads - Spencer Road and Clayton Road - with speeding drivers, dangerous driving. We’ve had a fatality on Spencer Road not too long ago and then we’ve had another accident recently on Spencer Road as well.

“Think - think about the consequences of your actions. Be careful, think about other road users and think about what could happen because of your speeding and moment of madness.”

Cllr Dodds added: “I think for the last few years it has been the number one issue that people have raised in neighbourhood forums and also just when you are out and about talking to people. They are always telling you about speeding cars, driving standards and it’s really a priority of concern.”

She said that the Council’s highways department is to introduce some measures on the road, while Cllr Jabar said communities must come on board.

“If there is people speeding or there is anti-social driving they need to report it,” he said. “Let’s work together and eradicate this problem.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers from the Bradford South area team are aware of some concerns regarding speeding in the Spencer Road area and have been working with local councillors.

“A recent speed-watch operation in the area did not record anyone travelling at an excessive speed.

“Warning letters were sent to motorists travelling just over the speed limit. Further speed-watch operations in the area are planned and will be carried out in partnership with the local councillors and residents.”
