A NEIGHBOUR said he was “terrified” when what he thought were fireworks outside a nearby house just after midnight turned out to be gunshots.

An investigation is under way after a firearm was apparently fired twice at 12.20am yesterday in what police are describing as a targeted attack.

Police said a vehicle standing on the drive of the semi-detached house in Leeds Old Road, Bradford, was shot at.

Meanwhile, shot marks were visible yesterday on the downstairs bay window of the property. The car has been removed for forensic examination.

The vehicle the attacker used to drive off was found burnt out in Square Street, West Bowling, around 10 minutes later, police said.

The neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard the bangs and thought it was fireworks. When I found out it was a weapon, I was shaken. I have children and grandchildren here. I know the family that lives there. They are a good, religious family. The father is well known nationally for his peace talks and he is also a school governor. It is terrifying.”

Councillor Zafar Iqbal (Labour, Bradford Moor) said he was disturbed by the shooting.

“This is the first time this has happened in Leeds Old Road. It is a quiet neighbourhood with a good community spirit.

“The police informed me soon after it happened. I have spoken to the family involved and they are very upset and shaken.

“I am going to have a meeting with the police soon and am also going to go around all the mosques in Bradford Moor to implore members of the community to come forward with any information if they have any. We have to stop this sort of thing happening in Bradford.”

No one was injured in the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Jaz Khan who leads the Force’s Firearms Prevent Team said detectives "already have some positive leads." He said: “What we now need is for members of the local community to come forward. We know that the attacker was waiting outside the scene for about half an hour to 40 minutes in a stolen Kia Venga car which had the false registration plates of BN12 UAK. We also know that the vehicle was stolen in Bradford on September 9. What we do not know is where it has been since then.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting log 18 of Wednesday, November 22.
