RESIDENTS are demanding road safety measures after 70 per cent of motorists were found to be speeding during a 24-hour monitoring period on a ‘rat run’.

A 24-hour traffic survey was conducted in Baildon Road, Baildon, which has a 30mph speed limit, last month.

A total of 9,672 out of 13,851 vehicles were caught driving over the road’s speed limit, with 15 of those caught driving over 61mph – double the limit – according to a Bradford Council report.

In the five years to September 9 this year, nine collisions were recorded on the road, which resulted in 15 ‘slight’ casualties, according to Bradford Council records.

There are currently no plans to introduce traffic management measures in Baildon Road, which would cost £28,000.

A 145-signature petition calling for a speed camera on the road and speed bumps was handed to councillors at Shipley Area Committee’s meeting on Wednesday.

The committee decided to put the traffic reduction call on its list for consideration for its roads scheme budget for the 2018/19 financial year.

It also asked Bradford Council’s highways department and West Yorkshire Police to consider it for temporary measures, such as mobile speed cameras.

Jocelyn Mulholland, 37, of Baildon Road, feared there would be more accidents and said it was dangerous for pedestrians.

She said: “It’s a busy road. I think it’s careless to wait for a fatality before speeding on the road is tackled.

“It is just dangerous to leap out of your car.

“The volume of traffic is increasing. There are so many families and older people who live down the road.

“I have seen some near misses of cars whizzing right by. I’m just thankful there has not been an accident so far.”

Councillor Debbie Davies (Con, Baildon) said the road was ‘choc-a-bloc’ with traffic during the morning and evening rush hours – but when the traffic freed up, speeding became a frequent problem.

She said: “Whenever the road is clear, people are speeding.

“It is a main road. We all want something done about this.

“What we could have is a temporary speed camera to catch a few people and get them to think twice about speeding.

“The statistics show there are a lot of people speeding.”

Councillor Mike Pollard (Con, Baildon) called for police to carry out a blitz on the road as part of its Operation Steerside clampdown on dangerous driving in the district.
