CHANGES have been submitted to plans for a boutique cinema and restaurant complex currently under construction next to The Broadway shopping centre in Bradford.

The alterations, if approved, could see the addition of a small cinema screen for private viewings accessed from Bank Street in place of a planned cafe area.

There are also proposals to provide a bar area in the cinema foyer .

The changes mean that there will only be one entrance to the main cinema, off Broadway, with a separate entrance to the private cinema screen only.

Bradford Council planners are currently considering the amendments to the design.

In documents submitted to the Council it states: “We are proposing to have a 20 person cinema screen, available for private hire to watch films, show presentations etc.

“It will house a combination of luxurious armchairs and sofas upholstered in luxurious fabrics.

“Seating will be accompanied by small side tables for drinks and snacks.

“The walls will be acoustically lined in a dark colour. Then dressed with heavy velvet theatre curtains with plush mood lighting.

“The social space just outside of the screen will be available to be hired out and used in conjunction with the screen.

“The design will mirror that luxurious, warm and almost homely feel that the screen has.”

The application follows the confirmation last month that the new cinema complex will now open by Easter next year.

The six-screen 780-seat cinema on Broadway had been scheduled to open this winter, and while construction work will be completed this year, the opening has been pushed into spring next year.

Operator The Light has taken the decision based on other cinemas it is developing.

The firm already successfully operates cinemas in eight different locations around the country, including Bolton, Cambridge, Sheffield, Stockport and Walsall.

Ian Ward, general manager at The Broadway, said at the time: “Construction on The Light cinema complex is currently due to be completed in late November, with a tentative opening planned for Easter 2018.

“The opening of The Light in Bradford has been rescheduled. Timings were revised slightly by The Light to co-ordinate with new openings elsewhere in the country.”

The scheme on Broadway involves transforming an existing row of shops into a boutique cinema, restaurants and cafes and adds 40,000 sq ft to the shopping centre development.

Work started to clear the area for construction in August last year, stripping back the building to a steel frame, ready for the redevelopment to begin.

A main contractor for the £4.1 million project was announced in March.

The cinema and restaurant development is being built at units 16 to 20 Broadway, which used to be home to Burger King, HMV, and Superdrug.

When complete the development will create more than 100 jobs.
