YEAR 6 pupils from Water Street Primary School in Skipton will take over the running of Craven Museum and Skipton Library as part of Takeover Day tomorrow.

The day is a celebration of children and young people’s contributions to museums and arts organisations by giving them an opportunity to work alongside staff and volunteers.

At the museum, pupils will run a number of activities for visitors, including a First World War object handling session and craft activities for young children.

They will also get the chance to become a curator for the day by learning about the museum’s collection and curating their own mini exhibition using previous unseen World War One artefacts from the museum store.

Rob Freeman, from Craven District Council’s Craven and the First World War project, a Heritage Lottery Funded project commemorating the centenary of World War One in Craven, said: “If you have young children, bring them down to the museum to join in with the free craft activities.

“For those with an interest in the First World War, come along to find out about some of the fascinating objects held in the museum's First World War collection in a show and tell session being led by the pupils.”

The activities will take place from 10am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 3pm and are free to the public.

Meanwhile, at the library pupils will be busy creating a Christmas themed ‘light-up’ window display for the front window.

Water Street’s Year 6 class teacher, Jenny Macnab, said: “This is our third year of taking part in Takeover Day and it is always a wonderful opportunity for all the children in Year 6 to be involved.

“They learn a huge amount about how a museum and library is run and what goes on behind the scenes.

“The children absolutely love it - it is especially rewarding to see some of our less confident pupils really excel and embrace the challenge.”

Takeover Day is organised by Kids in Museums which has teamed up with Arts Council England to help place children and teenagers at the heart of organisations.
