EVENTS have been held across the district to mark Armistice Day.

As the bells of Bradford City Hall chimed at 11am, the scores of people who had gathered at the city centre cenotaph fell silent to hear the Last Post, followed by two minutes of silence.

This year marked 99 years since the guns fell silent, marking the end of World War One.

The Very Revd. Jerry Lepine. Dean of Bradford Cathedral led the short service, which was also attended by veterans and members of the Royal British Legion.

Rev Lepine said: "This marks the moment the guns fell silent, and let us pray that the guns will fall silent across the world again, and in this insecure world we will one day see peace in our lifetime."

The service was attended by Bradford Council Leader Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe and Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Abid Hussain.

In Cleckheaton there was a similar event at the town's war memorial at Cleckheaton Memorial Park attended by many veterans as well as members of the public eager to pay their respects.

Other events had been held yesterday, with many schools getting involved in remembrance activities.

Crowds turned out in force on Friday for the remembrance service at Undercliffe Cemetery, where many of Bradford's war dead are buried. Cllr Hussain attended the service, which was led by last year’s Lord Mayor Cllr Geoff Reid.

Cadets, veterans, local residents, children from local schools, and members of the Undercliffe Cemetery Charity all attended the service, which was held at 11am.

Bradford College public services students formed a guard of honour at 11am to mark the day.

Meanwhile Foxhill Primary School pupils helped create a "weeping window" similar to one seen at the Tower of London recently. The "river" of red poppies were made out of plastic bottles.

St Cuthbert & The First Martyrs Catholic Primary School held a Remembrance Liturgy and two minute silence on Friday morning with prayers for peace.

They also sang the hymn 'In Flander's Fields' which was learned especially for the event. Year 4 pupils performed a poem 'A Wish' by Maxine Kendall about a child's wish for lasting peace.
