A MAN who smashed a neighbour over the head with a beer bottle at a New Year’s Eve party has been given a jail sentence.

David Marshall, 48, of Southfield Avenue, Odsal, Bradford, was at Adam Gummerson’s house on the same street on December 31 last year when the assault occurred.

Mr Gummerson suffered a cut to his head but did not require medical treatment.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Marshall had initially been charged with aggravated burglary, but Judge Colin Burn said he accepted Marshall had been invited to the house and had taken the bottle with him to drink rather than as a weapon.

Marshall pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm prior to a trial due to start today. He was sentenced to six months in prison, but was released as a result of him having been in custody since May.
