BRADFORD Council will set out ten priorities for how to make cycling “a part of everyone’s daily life” in the coming years.

The updated cycling strategy includes creating and promoting the Canal Green Cycleway, providing cycling training to all receptio-aged children in the district, and even creating a national standard velodrome to replace the existing track at the soon- to-be-demolished Richard Dunn centre.

The Council’s executive will be asked to endorse the district’s Cycle Strategy when it meets tomorrow.

A report being presented to the executive says the strategy’s aim is to “make Bradford district a place where cycling is naturally part of everyone’s daily life”.

It says events like the Tour de France Grand Depart, which came through the district in 2014, the Tour de Yorkshire and the new cycle superhighway connecting Leeds and Bradford have boosted Bradford’s cycling aspirations, and meant the strategy, first written in 2012, was in need of updating.

The 10 priorities in the new scheme are to:

* better link cycle routes between Shipley and Bradford through a new Canal Road Greenway

* develop a new cycle route plan for congested areas

* create a fund specifically to repair cycle routes

* create a replacement for the cycle track at the Richard Dunn centre when it is closed

* create a district “cycle champion"

* provide cycle training to all reception children in Bradford

* continue and expand mass participation cycling events

* promote cycling locally through social media

* adopt a “Midlands style” minimum passing distance campaign

* make a final decision on the proposed conversion of the blocked-up Queensbury Tunnel as a major underground cycling route.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “Bradford has seen a step-change in cycling opportunities and events since the launch of the original strategy so it’s the right time to refresh it.

“The district is a fantastic place for cycling with great routes for both commuters and leisure riders, and boasts brilliant teams and cycling clubs.”

Recommendations in the report to the Executive will ask members to endorse the report, Cycle Strategy and its Action Plan. The executive meets in City Hall at 10.30am.
