WHO will be your Christmas star this December?

Lord Mayor of Bradford Abid Hussain was the first to start of the 2017 annual Christmas Stars appeal by dedicating a star to his mum Said Begum.

Each year gold stars are dedicated to special people who have passed away, are close in loved ones’ hearts or who have made a real contribution to their communities or lives of others throughout the year.

About 200 stars are hung during December as part of the festive appeal on City Hall’s Christmas tree in the Banqueting Hall.

The Christmas Stars Appeal is run in partnership with the Telegraph and Argus.

The stars are £5 each to buy and all the money raised is donated to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which this year is going to the charity Down Syndrome Training and Support Service and the Lord Mayor’s own Wishing Well appeal.

The Down Syndrome Training and Support Service is a Bingley-based charity designed to support children and young people with Down syndrome and their families and also the professionals who work with them.

The Wishing Well Appeal will provide small grants for organisations and other smaller groups across the Bradford district needing help to make a difference.

Anyone who buys a star will be invited to a special reception at City Hall on Thursday December 7, from 5pm.

During the seasonal event people will be able to meet the Lord Mayor and proudly hang their own stars on the Christmas tree.

Cllr Hussain said: “This is a really nice way for people to think about those they care about, especially at this special time of year, as well as raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
