MORTON in Bloom is seeking funding to expand its work – and the public is being urged to get behind the bid.

The voluntary organisation, which is responsible for most of the village's floral displays and activities such as litter-picks, has applied to the Aviva Community Fund.

Now the group needs people's votes to go forward to the finals, where a judging panel will select the winners.

If successful, up to £1,000 would be awarded.

"We are a small group of volunteers who want to make a difference," said Morton in Bloom chairman, Jeanette Procter.

"We're very proud of the floral displays in the village and the fact that Morton already looks 'blooming great', but there is always room for improvement!"

The group oversees the upkeep of the village green, benches and table, in addition to floral features and the 'gateways' to East Morton.

But as it looks to enter next year's Yorkshire in Bloom competition, more community involvement is being sought.

It is hoped to stage hanging basket and window box workshops, which would be open to residents of all ages.

Households in the village would be leafleted with details.

The Aviva funding would help with the initial outlay for the planters, hanging baskets and window boxes, which would subsequently be loaned to villagers.
