A SCENE of “carnage” greeted residents following a road smash last night on West Lane in Keighley.

At least two parked cars had been hit by an Audi which also careered along the pavement damaging walls and garden gates.

The vehicles had been shunted several metres down the steep road and rubbish from wheelie bins was strewn across the road following the 8.40pm incident.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene of the accident below the junction with Whin Knoll Avenue.

PCSO James Butterfield tweeted a warning for people to stay away from the scene of what he called a “nasty” road traffic collision.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

Police cordoned off West Lane for more than two hours so the vehicles could be taken away and the road cleared of glass and debris.

West Lane residents today said the car had travelled up Whin Knoll Avenue then hit a parked car as it turned the steep corner to go down West Lane.

The owner of one of the damaged parked cars, who did not wish to be named, said she had been alerted after hearing what sounded like an explosion.

She said: “I ran outside thinking someone had been hurt. My wall had been knocked down and the garden was strewn with glass. There were a lot of people shouting.

“My car was pushed quite a way down the road and pushed into the centre. The cannot hit my car ended up on the path and scraped along the wall.

“Because all our wheelie bins were out for recycling, the rubbish was strewn across the road. It looked like carnage.

“The police were there very quickly and took control of the situation. They closed the road until the car was removed at about 11pm and a cleansing crew came to clear the road."

A police spokesman confirmed police had been called to reports of a road traffic collision at 8.37pm yesterday on West Lane.

She said: “Two cars were involved, a blue Audi A3 and a silver Audi A6. A stationary vehicle, a white Nissan Micra, was damaged during the incident.

“No one was injured in the collision.”

Another West Lane resident, who also did not want to be named, said: “I just heard the smash and saw the aftermath. The road was closed and police, fire and ambulance attended.”
