POLICE are at the scene of a shooting in a Bradford street.

Armed officers were called to Hill Top Road in Thornton, Bradford, at 2.23am today following a report of gunshots being heard.

They found a vehicle which appeared to have damage consistent with a firearm discharge.

Officers sent to the scene found damage to a property in Hill Top Road which also appeared to be consistent with a firearms discharge.

Police were guarding cordons zig-zagged across the upper part of the street.

Spent shell cases could be seen scattered on the road near two vehicles.

The windscreen of a blue Vauxhall Corsa looked shattered and there appered to be a bullet hole on the passenger-side rear of another dark-silver coloured vehicle near by.

Scenes of crime officers were examining both cars and were searching an area outside a modern mews-style end house, going in and out of the property.

Only police were seen at the property, accessed by stone steps overlooking Thornton village.

There have been no reports of injuries and inquiries were continuing at the scene today, said a West Yorkshire Police spokesman.

People living nearby are shocked at the incident.

One man thought he had heard a bike backfiring in the early hours but now believes it could have been gunfire.

"The bike seemed to be going round and rounds and then I thought it was backfiring. It could have been a gun," he said.

Another man who lives nearby said: "My wife's freaking out. We've got a little baby. It's scary there's been someone out there with a gun. It's frightening.

"There's been lots of burglaries in Thornton recently but this is worse. This is really something to worry about."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 127 of 20 October.

Councillor Richard Dunbar (Lab, Thornton & Allerton) urged anyone with information about the shootings to come forward to police.

"It's a concern a firearm has been on our streets but police are on the scene and investigating. I'm confident they will get to the bottom of this.

"If anyone has any information about the incident I'd urge them to tell the police."
