A VIOLENT criminal who went on the run towards the end of his carjacking trial has had his jail term increased by ten days.

Waqas Hussain (pictured), 20, was handed a 12-year sentence in his absence for five counts of robbery and possession of a firearm on July 20.

He had absconded from court while on bail during a break in proceedings following the end of the prosecution closing speech.

A manhunt by police ensued until Hussain, of Fearnsides Terrace, Girlington, Bradford, was found hiding out at an address in Heckmondwike.

He was brought back before the court on July 28 and admitted breaching his bail conditions.

During the trial, the jury heard that the robberies, which took place between October and December last year, involved weapons such as machetes, swords and baseball bats.

Passing the additional sentence, Judge Colin Burn said: “Obviously you have already received a significant sentence, it is going to be some years before you are released.”
