A FAMILY have been left temporarily homeless after a car ploughed through a metal fence and smashed into the back of their newly-rented house.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Crossley Drive, just off Quaker Lane in Little Horton, Bradford, at about 12.30am today.

Gulshan Yaqoob, 29, said she was inside the house with her two children, aged seven and six, when she heard “a loud bang”.

On heading out into her back garden, she saw that the driver of a white Mercedes-Benz had apparently lost control when turning into Quaker Lane from Southfield Road and had crashed through the fence into the house.

“The whole house shook, it was really scary,” she said.

“It was a young Asian lad, he was only 18. It was his mum’s disability car.

“He ran off but then came back to try to move the car, but it was stuck. The fire service had to pull it out.

“The police told me that the fence has been tested at up to 70mph, so he must have been doing about 90 or 100mph to go through it.”

Miss Yaqoob said she had been told that the house, which she said was provided by Bradford Council, might have suffered structural damage as a result of the impact and that it would be unsafe for her to stay there until it can be assessed.

She said that may take a “couple of weeks”, during which time she and her children will be forced to find a hotel.

“It’s a new-build house and we’ve only been there two weeks, but the kids are scared to go back,” she said.

“They woke and saw the police and the fire engines. It’s hard enough when you are starting in a new house and now this has happened straightaway.”

Miss Yaqoob said the driver had been spoken to by police at the scene but said she was unsure whether he had been arrested.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact police on 101.
