A VOLUNTEER at a charity shop in Keighley has shown that you are never too old to give up time for a good cause.

Alan Bingley, of Keighley Volunteer Centre who works at the Second Time Around store, turned 90 this week.

A volunteer centre spokesman said: "We had the pleasure of recognising the landmark birthday of our dedicated volunteer, Alan Bingley.

"Although he is one of our oldest volunteers he is certainly still very young at heart.

"He has been volunteering at Second Time Around in Cavendish Street since 2010, where he helps out with a wide range of jobs.

"Over the years Alan has given more than 1,300 hours of his time to help out in our charity shop, which raises funds for local projects and also provides placements for people with learning disabilities."

Zoe Mortimer, the manager of the shop, said: “Alan is an amazing volunteer and a pleasure to have around.

"He never complains and is always cheerful. All our staff and volunteers enjoy working with him, as he has lots of interesting stories to tell and will always share a pearl of wisdom.”

Mr Bingley said: “I love working at the shop as it keeps me active and gives me something to do each week.

"I really enjoy meeting new people and have made lots of friends over the years. Volunteering helps me to feel young and keeps me out of mischief!”

Mr Bingley was presented with a gift hamper by the charity's chief executive officer, Gary Pedley.

Mr Pedley said: “Alan is a valued team member and a real inspiration to us all.”
