FIREFIGHTERS from Bradford and Illingworth stations will take on a gruelling 26-mile course to support their own “emergency service” on Sunday, September 24.

The four-strong team – consisting of Dave Burland and Simon Moore, both watch managers at Bradford fire station, and Illingworth firefighters Rich Harwood and John Hudson – are running the 44th Berlin Marathon to raise funds for the Mind UK Blue Light Programme.

Research by Mind has found that members of the emergency services are more at-risk from mental health problems than the general population, but less likely to seek support.

Ian Bitcon, West Yorkshire Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said: “We have put a huge amount of effort into raising awareness of mental health, both within the community and within our own workforce.

“The Blue Light Programme is a fantastic initiative aimed at keeping emergency workers safe. We are enormously proud of these four firefighters who are challenging themselves and no doubt putting themselves through pain and discomfort for the benefit of others.”

The team is aiming to raise at least £1,000, and Mr Moore said: “Funding will enable the programme to continue providing much-needed advice and support to those that need it. It's our emergency service.”
