FLORAL tributes have been laid at the spot where a woman died after being struck by a car in central Bradford.

Flowers and messages today blanketed the post of a pedestrian crossing near The Broadway shopping centre, where Hall Ings becomes Leeds Road.

The woman in her 50s, who has still not been named by police, was struck by a VW Golf on Wednesday afternoon and died at the scene, despite the efforts of paramedics, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew and passers-by to try to save her.

Many of the bunches of flowers contained messages of condolence.

One handwritten note said: “I’m the driver of the vehicle. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I’m so sorry for for what has happened. Rest in peace.”

Other flowers and notes were from family members.

One said: “Mum, you will be missed so much. We love you millions, always and forever.

“Love your kids and grandkids and hubby xxx”

Another message read: “To my wonderful sister and best friend, rest in peace sis.”

One said: “RIP my little sis, love and miss you always.”

And another said: “To dear sister, you will be missed so much. Rest in peace.”

A longer, typewritten sheet, with road safety messages, could be seen tied to the post yesterday lunchtime but later appeared to have been removed.

A 30-year-old man, who had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

One witness to the accident today told the Telegraph & Argus that she had been left very shaken by what she had seen.

Maryam Khan said: “I was at the bus stop and I heard a big bang. I just ran to see what it was, and it was the lady who had got knocked over.

“It was really horrible. I’ve never known an accident like that. It’s still on my mind, knowing she has died.

“It’s really distressing, because I’ve never seen anything like that happen.”
